Provence

Provence is a former province of France in the south east of country, now part of the administrative region of Provence-Alpes-Cote-d'Azur. The region is famous for it warm, dry climate, delicious cuisine, fine wine and beautiful countryside.

The area is situated on the Mediterranean next to the border with Italy. Provence stretches from the Rhone in the west to the Alps in the east and encompasses the departements of Bouches-du-Rhone, Vaucluse and Var. This is the France that inspired Van Gogh, captured famously in many of his paintings, with its rolling hills, olive groves and vineyards.

Rosé wine is a speciality of Provence using Carignan, Cinsault, Grenache and Syrah grapes, an ideal complement to the famous Provencale cuisine. The town of Grasse, near Nice, is renowned for its perfumes.

Areas of special interest include the southern marshlands of Camargue, the stunning Canyon du Verdun, Mont Ventoux and the mountains in the east, Pont d'Avingnon, Arles, Frejus and St Raphael.

There are many activities to occupy the tourist in Provence, with its varied terrain ideal for stimulating walking and cycling tours. The many historical towns and landmarks make it fertile ground for the sightseer and, of course, the Provencale cuisine and wines should satisfy the most discerning gastronome.
