Frejus

A visit to Frejus is a must for the Provence tourist interested in history or sightseeing. This has been an area rich in art and culture since a large Roman settlement was established here by Julius Caesar in 49BC.

The colony became an important trading route and military port on the Mediterranean coast and many Roman remains can be seen today, including a large amphitheatre, baths, a gateway and an aqueduct.

You can also visit monuments from later periods in history at the Cite Episcopale, on Place Formige, such as the cathedral, cloisters, baptistery and the bishopĂs palace. Elsewhere there is the Cocteau Chapel, finished in 1965 by E Dermit after being conceived by Jean Cocteau four years earlier.

Port Frejus has been constructed on the site of Frejus Plage and the French navy are often a presence in the town. Sandy beaches and paths are accessible from St Aygulf port.

Other than the obvious sightseeing there are many activities available for the visitor to Frejus to enjoy, such as watersports (including sailing, kayaking, windsurfing, etc), horse riding and tennis or you can visit the Aquatica Water Park. Even archaeological digs can be arranged for the intrepid history enthusiast.
