Cannes

Cannes on the French Riviera is sometimes referred to as the Star of the Riviera. The city has become world famous for its annual and prestigious film festival and also as an elegant and upmarket tourist destination.

Cannes is situated on the shore of La Napoule Bay, overlooked by the Esterel heights. It is strange to think that until the middle of the 19th century, it was a small fishing village in south east France but it has since grown into a splendid and glamorous city and a symbol of the chic and sophistication associated with the Cote díAzur.

The Boulevard de la Croisette is a palm-tree-lined promenade following the bay for three miles, amongst gardens, luxury hotels, bars and restaurants, to Port Canto and Palm Beach, with the Rue díAntibes leading back to the city centre. The Rue Meynadier is a bustling street with a wealth of shops and cafes. In the Allees de la Liberte, overlooking the harbour packed with boats, there is a flower market every morning.

Other places of interest include the Haute Ville, with its stunning views from Mont Chevalier, the Vieux Port (old port) alongside the Quai St Pierre, and the pier Albert Edouard where the biggest and most luxurious yachts of the rich and famous are moored.

Another must-see is the Palais des Festivals, the splendid building that hosts the many festivals and conferences for which Cannes has become renowned, including the International Film Festival.
